About this blog

The Summary

Cat Mom + Domestic Engineer + Trailing Spouse + Maker currently living in Switzerland New Jersey with her husband and 2 fluffy cats. We are working on making this blog un-typical and planning on having a blast in 2013.

I drink tea for water, enjoy knitting, sometimes crochet, thrift-shopping, cooking, the occasional baking, thence eating, and travelling. When not tending to my Etsy Shop, I teach myself to make my own clothes, while being assisted by one of our cats, the little Ms. Pickle.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why Juanita Tortilla?
Juanita is my name. Tortilla rhymes with it, I was told. Here's the real story.
  • What do you blog about?
We are a Husband 'N Wife duo with a pair of world-travelling fluffy cats, Fluffy and Pickle. We are homebodies enjoying domestic bliss... I make little bits of jewellery + accessories, I knit + crochet, I cook + clean, the works; staying in touch with my closest friends through the blog. Now, I'm sharing all this with the world.
  • How did you start your shop?
As a youngling I enjoyed making things. I daydreamed a heck of a lot, too. Still do. That meant that when I am not creating something, I am dreaming about creating something. In 2004, a friend suggested that I set up an online store for the things I make. So, I did just that: juanitatortilla.etsy.com
  • What's with this significant year, 2004?
That's when I became a Domestic Engineer as a very poor student's wife in a quiet college town. See my blog's banner? 'Since 2004,' it says. Great milestone.
  • Where did you learn to make things?
It's all self-taught -- from jewellery-making, sewing, to knitting and crochet. Although, I did learn to cook and sew as a young girl in school in Home Economics classes. But that was a lifetime ago.
  • What are you crafting now?
My latest craft craze is dressmaking. I want to make clothes that fit me, since I'm rather odd-shaped, than fuss and whine about how thick-waisted I am. It'd be fantastic if I could open my wardrobe and go, 'Look! I made all these!'... But making clothes is so technical, time-consuming, and back-breaking. Despite online tutorials and courses, it's a whole other dimension and huge learning curve when one sits down to actually do it.
  • Where am I?
I am currently located in this little sleepy town called Rocky Hill in New Jersey.

I'm glad you're here. Please do say Hi!
